County Convention 2023

The 2023 Armagh County Convention took place in the Na Piarsaigh Óga club house on Thursday 14th December

Chairperson, Paul McArdle, pays tribute to outgoing county officers.

Paul McArdle, Chairperson of Armagh GAA, paid tribute to outgoing county officers Paul Duggan and Michael Savage for their work at county committee level over the past number of years. Paul also thanked outgoing Planning & Training officer, Emmet Haughian, and wished him well in his new position in Croke Park. Paul also noted that February would see Jarlath Burns begin his term as Uachtarán CLG and wished him all the best in his time as President of our organisation.

A number of motions to be submitted to GAA congress were debated and subsequently voted upon by the club delegates with motions surrounding heavier punishments for players using abusive language towards match officials, more substitutions for underage league competitions to increase participation, the removal of the forward mark and to consider methods other than penalties in the event that a game finishes in a draw.

A motion to amend an existing county bye-law was passed to allow more members to be appointed to the County Management Committee.

A number of recommendations were made by clubs and also carried; that age grades within the county are held for at least a three year period, that dual clubs be allowed at least a seven day rest period between championship fixtures across codes and that the Reserve Football Championship should be graded to allow lower divisional teams to compete at a level commensurate with their numbers and stage of development.

Before Paul McArdle’s closing remarks and Muireann O’Kane’s outstanding rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann, the convention unanimously sent solidarity to both Bellaghy and Derry GAA for Sean Brown, who was murdered in May 1997 while locking up the gates of his club as Chairperson, as they call for an end to the ongoing delays in the inquest process.

Paul finished by congratulating all of the 2024 officers and said that he is “really looking forward to working with all elected officers” and wished “all delegates a happy, peaceful and safe Christmas.”
