Free Gaeltacht Irish language course for GAA members

The Ulster Council of the GAA are organising their annual Gaeltacht course in Downings, County Donegal between Monday 17 July and Friday 21 July. The course, which is free to adult members of the GAA, includes classes for beginners, improvers and advanced level learners. The Irish language has a central role within the founding constitution of the GAA and this course is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in ensuring that the Irish language remains pivotal to the aims of our Association.

The Ulster GAA has sponsored the course for the past 29 years and it was initially set up to encourage active members of the GAA to learn enough Irish to allow them to conduct some of the business of club and county affairs through the medium of Irish. The course is held in memory of Séamus de Faoite, who was secretary of the Ulster GAA Irish language committee from 1989 until his untimely passing in 2006. As well as daily language classes, the course includes singing classes, céilí dancing, a concert featuring Ulster’s Scór and Scór na nÓg champions, a lecture and question and answer session. Application forms are available on the Ulster Council website at http://ulster.gaa.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cursa-de-Faoite-2017.pdf

Speaking about the course, Ulster GAA president, Michael Hasson said, “The week following the Ulster Football Final provides an opportunity for much enjoyment from the relaxed atmosphere at this well organised week of cultural activities. This is the traditional date where many congregate with a mutual love of the Irish Language, song and dance. Whilst the main activity is the learning or improvement of spoken Irish; it is the choice of the individual what class or activity they attend. Should you be a beginner or a fluent speaker your needs will be accommodated.”

Tá Comhairle Uladh den CLG ag eagrú cúrsa Gaeltachta sna Dúnaibh, Contae Dhún na nGall idr an Luan 17 Iúil agus an Aoine 21 Iúil. Bíonn bunrang, meánrang agus ardrang ann ag an chúrsa, atá saor in aisce do bhaill CLG. Tá áit lárnach ag an Ghaeilge i mbunreacht an CLG agus deis iontach atá sa chúrsa seo do dhaoine atá ag iarraidh a chinntiú go mbeidh an Ghaeilge barrthábhachtach d’aidhmeanna ár gCumann feasta.

Tá CLG Uladh ag tabhairt urraíochta don chúrsa seo le 29 bliain agus cuireadh ar bun é sa chéaduair le baill CLG a spreagadh an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim sa dóigh go dtiocfadh leo cuid de ghnó an chlub agus an chontae a reáchtáil trí mheán na Gaeilge. Eagraítear an cúrsa i gcuimhne ar Shéamus de Faoite, rúnaí coiste Gaeilge CLG Uladh ó 1989 go dtí go bhfuair sé bás i 2006. Chomh maith leis na ranganna Gaeilge gach lá, bíonn imeachtaí eile ann mar shampla ranganna amhránaíochta, rince céilí, ceolchoirm le curaidh Scór agus Scór na nÓg an chúige, léacht agus seisiún ceisteanna le haíonna speisialta. Tá foirmeacha iarratais ar fáil ó shuíomh idirlín Chomhairle Uladh ag http://ulster.gaa.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cursa-de-Faoite-2017.pdf

Agus é ag labhairt ar an chúrsa, dúirt Uachtarán CLG Uladh, Mícheál Ó hOisín, dúirt sé, “Bíonn deis againn sult a bhaint as timpilleacht pleisiúrtha réchúiseach an chúrsa an tseachtain i ndiaidh cluiche ceannais peile Uladh. Is i rith na seachtaine seo a bhailíonn cuid mhór daoine le

chéile ar mór acu an Ghaeilge, an ceol agus an rince. Ar ndóigh, is é foghlaim nó feabhsú na Gaeilge an chloch is mó ar phaidrín lucht an chúrsa; ach is faoin duine féin cé acu rang agus cé acu imeacht a dhéanfas sé nó sí. Is cuma cé acu atá tú ag tosú amach ar fhoghlaim na teanga no ag cur barr feabhais ar do chuid líofachta, beidh áit ann dui tar an chúrsa speisialta seo.”
