Jimmy Smyth honoured as CLG Ard Mhacha Uachtarán

There are times within the history of Armagh GAA when very special people make such an immense difference to our success and ongoing development. One such person is unquestionably Jimmy Smyth, a very distinguished past captain and newly appointed Uachtarán.

His dedication and contribution to his club Clan na Gael, county teams over many years, county charitable, social and fundraising events and significantly post primary schools is possibly unparalleled with Ulster GAA. This honour being bestowed to Jimmy Smyth is truly much deserved.

The successful playing exploits of Jimmy Smyth and the varied teams he represented is remarkable.

A county captain for many years Jimmy had the honour of captaining the 1977 team in the All Ireland Final against Dublin. Due to his vast array of skills, footballing brain and leadership qualities Jimmy represented Ulster in the Railway Cup on many occasions and was awarded an All Star in 1977. He has captained his club, county, province and country – an exceptional record.

From a player to coach, he coached County Senior Football teams, he won two County Senior titles as manager of his club, and an abundant amount of school underage teams to Ulster success in St Paul’s School, Lurgan where he taught for over 40 years.

Today he continues to give tirelessly of his time through the leadership of Ulster Schools where he has served as both secretary and chairman for over four decades, while also a representative on the National Schools Committee in Croke Park.

With his wise charm and never ending willingness to help others, Jimmy is a warm and worthy recipient of Uachtarán CLG Ard Mhacha, and today at halftime will bestow this honour.
