Charlie backs GAA Irish language initiative

Armagh GAA is delighted to lend its support to the GAA’s latest partnership with the Irish language Líofa campaign, which was devised by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure. Líofa, which means fluent, aims to encourage up to 20,000 people from right across the island to make a personal commitment to learning Irish by the year 2020 and it has already attracted over 13,000 learners.

The new partnership was recently launched in Páirc an Chrócaigh with Uachtarán Aogán Ó Fearail speaking of the importance of the Irish language to the GAA, with prominence being given to the national language in the Constitution and Official Guide of the Association. Armagh was well-represented at the launch with senior footballer Charlie Vernon present to speak about his own love for an Ghaeilge and the advantages it has given him in life. The county was also represented by Armagh Scór na nÓg instrumental champions Mullaghbane who provided the music at the launch.

Last Saturday, the Culture Committee of the Armagh GAA county board joined up with Armagh-based Irish language organisation CAIRDE Teo, to host intensive language courses in the Athletic Grounds. The courses were organised with the support of Líofa and all learners were encouraged to sign up to the campaign. The Athletic Grounds has been hosting Irish courses for the past number of years to help GAA members from across the county to learn our native language. Armagh GAA also promotes the use of Irish in match programmes with all player profiles bilingual, as well as numerous other articles in Irish or bilingually.

Many of our clubs also host language classes for adults and children, as well as summer schemes to teach Irish to children from the English-medium sector. Earlier this year, St Paul’s GAC in Lurgan won a provincial award for promotion of the language with Wolfe Tone’s GAC in Derrymacash winning the county award. Armagh GAA will continue to support our native language and we encourage all our members from clubs across the county to continue to support and learn the Irish language. If you are learning Irish or are interested in learning Irish, sign up to the Líofa campaign at www.liofa.eu.

Tá lúcháir ar CLG Ard Mhacha tacú le comhpháirtíocht úr idir an CLG agus an feachtas Líofa de chuid na Roinne Cultúir, Ealaíon agus Fóillíochta. Tá mar aidhm ag Líofa 20,000 duine ó achan chuid den oileán a spreagadh le tiomantas pearsanta a thabhairt an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim faoin bhliain 2020. Cheana féin, tá breis agus 13,000 foghlaimeoir cláraithe leis an fheachtas.

Seoladh an chomhpháirtíocht úr i bPáirc an Chrócaigh ar na mallaibh agus labhair Uachtarán CLG Aogán Ó Fearail faoin tábhacht a bhaineann leis an Ghaeilge sa Chumann, agus an teanga luaite go sonrach sa Bhunreacht agus sa Treoir Oifigiúil. Bhí ionadaíocht mhaith ann ó CLG Ard Mhacha leis an pheileadóir sinsear Charlie Vernon i láthair le labhairt ar an dáimh atá aige féin leis an Ghaeilge agus ar na buntáistí a thug sí dó. Chomh maith le Charlie, bhí grúpa ceoil Scór na nÓg ón Mhullach Bhán ann le casadh ag an láinseáil.

Ar an Satharn a chuaigh thart, d’eagraigh Coiste Cultúir CLG Ard Mhacha agus Cairde Teo, eagraíocht Ghaeilge sa chathair, d’eagraigh siad dianchúrsaí Gaeilge sa Pháirc Lúthchleasa. Eagraíodh na cúrsaí le tacaíocht ó Líofa agus chláraigh gach foghlaimeoir leis an fheachtas. Tá na dianchúrsaí á

reáchtáil le cúpla bliain anuas le deis a thabhairt do bhaill CLG ó achan chuid den chontae ár dteanga dhúchais a fhoghlaim. Bíonn an Ghaeilge in úsáid i gcláir na gcluichí agus bíonn na próifílí imreoirí uilig i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla fosta.

Bíonn ranganna Gaeilge do dhaoine fásta agus do pháistí i roinnt mhaith dár gclubanna, chomh maith le scéimeanna samhraidh le Gaeilge a theagasc do pháistí ó earnáil an Bhéarla. Níos luaithe i mbliana, d’éirigh le CLG Naomh Pól ón Lorgain duais cúige a bhaint ó Ghlór na nGael do chur chun cinn na Gaeilge agus bhain CLG De Bhuilbh Tóin i nDoire Mhic Cais duais an chontae. Tá CLG Ard Mhacha bródúil tacú lenár dteanga dhúchais agus iarann muid ar ár mbaill ó chlubanna in achan chuid den chontae tacaíocht a thabhairt don teanga agus í a fhoghlaim. Má tá tú ag foghlaim na Gaeilge nó má tá suim agat í a fhoghlaim, is féidir clárú le Líofa ag www.liofa.eu.
