Un21: Armagh v Antrim Team Announced

The Ulster Under 21 football championship was launched on Monday evening in Belfast, with Armagh captain Dónal O’Neill and team coach Davy O’Hare in attendance. Armagh open up their campaign against Antrim on Wednesday 18 March in the Athletic Grounds, a repeat of last year’s thrilling contests between the sides in the first round. Armagh looked to have had the game wrapped up last year, but a late Antrim comeback including a goal with the last kick of the ball brought the tie to extra time, but the sides could not be separated. The replay was played out on a wet night and it was another tight affair with Armagh prevailing to make their way to a semi-final tie against Dún na nGall. The men from the highlands brought an early end to Armagh’s campaign with a four point victory, helped in no small way by an impressive performance from Paddy McBrearty.

Speaking at the launch of the championship, team captain Dónal O’Neill looked ahead to the upcoming game against Antrim, “The whole team is looking forward to the challenge. This is our second year together at this level with Stevey, BillyJoe, Seán and Davy and we have all learned a lot from last year, both players and the management team. Training is going very well and all of the boys are enjoying their football at the minute.

There is a very tight bond there this year. Most of the lads have come through the county minor set-up in recent years and we all get along very well together. There are a good range of clubs represented on the panel, but there is a very strong commitment to Armagh. It’s great to have Ethan and Ciaron in there too. Sometimes it works against you to bring in some of the senior players, but the two boys have a very positive impact on the rest of the team and we are delighted to have them.

It’s nice to have the game in the Athletic Grounds too, as it is good to be preparing in familiar surrounds and all of the boys will be used to playing there with their clubs. It would be great to see a big Armagh support out next Wednesday. It’s always a big encouragement to the players to hear a vocal home support getting behind the team when it matters.” The Armagh and Antrim U21 championship tie throws in at 8pm in the Athletic Grounds on Wednesday 18 March.
