Armagh Hurlers off to a good start

Armagh senior hurlers got their competitive season up and running on Friday evening in the Conor McGurk tournament at the QUB playing fields in Belfast. It was a great start for the new management team of Sylvester McConnell and his assistant Pádraig Ó Conchúir claiming a victory over near neighbours, Down. While the game was a nip and tuck affair in the opening ten minutes, Armagh powered ahead and led by double scores at half time 0-10 to 0-5. The men from the Orchard started the second as they ended the first and were in control of the game with a brace of points and a goal from Conor Corvan pushing them further in front 1-15 to 0-7. Armagh were on top right across the field, but the Down men had their own purple patch with a number of unanswered points consolidated with a goal to bring them right back into the tie 1-16 to 1-12 with just ten minutes to go. However, Armagh showed great character and with a number of substitutions and tactical switches, regained their control of the game, finishing strongly with a well-worked second goal from Conor Corvan leaving the full time score 2-18 to 1-14.
