Charlie Vernon Backs Irish Language Initiative

Senior footballer Charlie Vernon is encouraging Armagh supporters to sign up to a new challenge to learn conversational Irish before the end of 2015. The ‘Líofa’ initiative is being promoted by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure in the north of Ireland and Armagh GAA were delighted to lend their support to the campaign, which aims to attract 10,000 learners by the end of next year. Charlie, who is a fluent Irish speaker, has also accepted the challenge of signing up a number of his Armagh teammates to learn the language or to brush up on the Irish they may already have.

Charlie was present in the Athletic Grounds to launch the latest in a series of intensive Irish language courses, which are organised by our Culture Committee. The next course takes place in the Ceannáras at the Athletic Grounds on Saturday 13 September between 10am and 4pm, with classes for beginners, intermediate level and advanced level. If you would like to register for the classes, please contact our Irish Cultural Officer Seán Ó Maoilsté irishculturalofficer.armagh@gaa.ie or 028 3751 5229.

Charlie’s love for our native language was instilled in him by his grandfather, who was an Irish teacher in Armagh. This interest was developed further at school and at the Irish colleges in the Donegal Gaeltacht during the summer. With his fluency in Irish, Charlie has received many opportunities which he may not have had without the language, with numerous appearances on TG4 GAA talk show Seó Spóirt and as an analyst on TG4 at club games during the All-Ireland series. Despite his footballing commitments with Armagh and his club Armagh Harps, Charlie has always found the time to play his part in the promotion of the Irish language in the city and across the county and he is delighted to be supporting this latest initiative to encourage Armagh supporters to rediscover the native and first language of the Gael.

Tá peileadóir sinsear Ard Mhacha Charlie Vernon ag iarraidh ar lucht tacaíochta Ard Mhacha clárú le dúshlán nua le Gaeilge labhartha a fhoghlaim roimh dheireadh 2015. ‘Líofa’ an t-ainm atá ar an tionscnamh atá á chur chun cinn ag an Roinn Cultúir, Ealaíon agus Fóillíochta i dtuiasceart na hÉireann agus tá ardlúcháir ar CLG Ard Mhacha bheith ag tacú leis an fheachtas, a bhfuil mar aidhm aige 10,000 foghlaimeoir a mhealladh chun na Gaeilge roimh dheireadh na bliana atá le teacht. Tá Charlie i ndiaidh glacadh le dúshlán chomh maith le roinnt dá gcomhimreoirí idirchontae a spreagadh an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim den chéaduair nó cur lena gcuid Gaeilge.

Gaeilgeoir líofa é Charlie agus bhí sé i láthair sa Pháirc Lúthchleasa do sheoladh an dianchúrsa Gaeilge sa tsraith dianchúrsaí a eagraíonn ár gCoiste Cultúir. Beidh an chéad dianchúrsa eile ar siúl sa Cheannáras ag an Pháirc Lúthchleasa Dé Sathairn 13 Meán Fómhair idir 10am agus 4pm, le bunrang, meánrang agus ardrang ann. Más mian leat clárú do na ranganna, dean teagmháil le hOifigeach Gaeilge CLG Ard Mhacha Seán Ó Maoilsté irishculturalofficer.armagh@gaa.ie nó 028 3751 5229.

Fuair Charlie an grá atá aige dár dteanga dhúchais óna athair mór, a bhí ina mhúinteoir Gaeilge in Ard Mhacha. Cuireadh leis an spies a bhí aige agus é ar scoil agus ag na coláistí samhraidh i

nGaeltacht Thír Chonaill. Fuair Charlie roinnt mhaith deiseanna iontacha de thairbhe go bhfuil Gaeilge Líofa ar a thoil aige agus bhí sé ar an chlár CLG Seó Spóirt a bhíonn ar TG4 roinnt uaireanta agus bhí sé mar anailísí do TG4 ag cúpla cluiche i gCraobh na hÉireann do na clubanna. In ainneoin é a bheith gnóthach leis an pheil le hArd Mhacha agus lena chlub féin Cláirsigh Ard Mhacha, thapaigh Charlie an deis i gcónaí an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn sa chathair agus ar fud an chontae. Tá lúcháir air bheith ábalta tacú leis an tionscnamh is déanaí seo le lucht tacaíochta Ard Mhacha a chur in aithne do theanga ársa na nGael, mar atá sa Ghaeilge.
