PLANNING approval for a new county training facility at St. Malachy’s Portadown has been given the green light, following a meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s Planning Committee today (Wednesday 8th June 2022).
The planning approval includes four playing fields (replacing existing pitch), sports changing pavilion with multi-purpose hall (incorporating meeting room, offices, stores, kitchen, dressing rooms, treatment rooms and toilets), gym building, maintenance building, spectator stands/terraces, catch nets, ball wall/training structure, inflatable sports bubble, floodlighting and car & coach parking.
Armagh County Board Chairman Michael Savage commented,
“This is a major step forward and a significant milestone reached for our much-needed county training facility.
“I want to thank the project team for their tremendous work and have played a vital role in bringing the project to this stage, and I want to thank Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council who have worked with us since we submitted plans in 2020.
“As a shovel-ready project, we will continue to explore all funding opportunities and I want to thank our clubs and members who have continued to support this development through our annual club draw.
“Now we need to keep looking ahead and deliver on this project to bring much-needed additional and improved facilities for all our county teams, this really is an exciting time for the future generations of Armagh GAA.”
Strategically located the development of the 26-acre site on the outskirts of Portadown will help address the need for county training facilities.
Planning application was submitted in February 2020.
